Character, Place and Simulation - An Archival Object in Augmented Reality (AR)
CPS allowed me to explore, experiment, and prototype the reflections that I took from my studio 2 project in AR. It also gave me new ideas in terms of what I can project in the augmented space. The tests I did were not so much focused on the technical aspect of AR but more so on then conceptual aspect of what I could utilise in AR. I wanted to explore the kinds of illusions I could create that didn’t necessarily require further technical knowledge in building a dedicated app or using a web-based AR that required coding to name a few. One of my favourite objects was the diegetic UI mock-up where I created very simple 2D assets in Procreate and projected them a layers in Adobe Aero. The process of creating and transferring to AR was straightforward and the outcome was quite impressive and felt conceptually solid. It was also the idea that really conveyed the notion that using illusion can elevate the experience of AR and did not require complex settings. An idea I want to explore, test and translate to AR is the aspect of portals, revealing what is hidden. An example is where a portal to a completely different world is opened through an image tracker, such as a QR code or image. Whilst 2D animation is my focus, it would be interesting to see if I can utilise a 2D-animated 3D object and project that in AR. Regardless, the exploration of the various themes covered in the eight weeks has allowed me to consider enhancements and potential directions to take in my ongoing project for Studio 3.
